Highlights of Day 6th of the London Olympics – London Olympics 2012 – 2 August 2012

> Gabby Douglas won the women’s all-around gymnastics title, becoming the third straight American to win the sport’s biggest prize and the first African-American. It’s her second gold medal of the London Games, coming two nights after she and her “Fierce Five” teammates gave the United States its first Olympic title since 1996.

> Michael Phelps got one last win over Ryan Lochte, winning the 200-meter individual medley to claim his 20th career medal – and 16th gold. He became the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics.

> Kayla Harrison became the first American judo champion in the Olympics, winning the gold medal in the under-78-kilogram division by beating Britain’s Gemma Gibbons 2-0. Harrison was sexually abused as a child by a judo coach who later was sentenced to 10 years in prison and expelled for life from the sport.

> American Rebecca Soni set her second world record in as many days to defend her Olympic title in the 200 breaststroke. She finished in 2:19.59, breaking her own mark of 2:20.00 set in the semifinals.

> American Tyler Clary rallied on the final lap to pull off the upset in the 200 backstroke, passing Ryan Lochte on the last lap to win the gold medal. Ryosuke Irie of Japan got the silver and Lochte ended up with the bronze.

> Carmelo Anthony set the U.S. Olympic mark for points in a basketball game – in less than three quarters. He scored 37, going 10 of 12 on 3-pointers, to lead the U.S. to an epic blowout against Nigeria, 156-73. Russell Westbrook scored 21 and Kobe Bryant added 16. The Americans also set the Olympic record for points in a game and points in a half (78). Brazil held the previous Olympic record of 138 points, against Egypt in 1988

> Rafalca, a horse part-owned by Ann Romney, and rider Jan Ebeling posted a score good for 13th place in equestrian dressage with half the 50 competitors still to go. The wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney watched from the VIP section, gave horse and rider a standing ovation, and said the performance “thrilled me to death.”

MEDALS

> Sizwe Ndlovu and fellow crew members James Thompson, Matthew Brittain and John Smith won the lightweight men’s four to give South Africa its first rowing gold medal in the sport.

> The United States and China are tied for the lead in gold medals with 18 each. The Americans have three more total medals, 37 in all.

NOT THEIR FINEST HOUR

Two disqualifications marred the women’s team sprint in track cycling at the London Velodrome. In the first round, the British pair made an early change – the point in the race when one rider gives way to the second. The Chinese team of Guo Shuang and Gong Jinjie, which had already set two world records at the event, dominated the final and had just finished a victory lap when they were disqualified for an illegal lane change. The Germans took gold.

JUDO DIPLOMACY

Russian President Vladimir Putin, a longtime judo enthusiast, cheered on his country’s newest gold medalist, Tagir Khaibulaev, from a VIP seat in ExCel arena. Putin watched the fight with British Prime Minister David Cameron and appeared to educate him on the finer points of the sport. Later, Putin met Khaibulaev moments after he walked off the mat, wrapped him in a warm embrace, and tousled his hair.

Highlights of Day 4 of the London Olympics – London Olympics 2012 – 31 July 2012

London Olympics Day 4 Highlights Include Michael Phelps, Ye Shiwen, U.S. Women’s Gymnastics

> Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all time by winning his 19th medal – a gold – as the United States romped to a dominating win in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay. Phelps now has 15 golds, two silvers and two bronzes over three Olympics, moving ahead of Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who got her haul in 1956, 1960 and 1964.

> The team of Gabrielle Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber lived up to all the hype, winning the first U.S. Olympic title in women’s gymnastics since 1996.

> American Allison Schmitt won the 200 freestyle with a dominating performance that left everyone else, including teammate Missy Franklin, battling for the other medals. It was her first career gold medal, to go along with a silver in the 400 free and a bronze in the 4×100 free relay. The 17-year-old Franklin was denied her third medal in London, one night after her gutsy victory in the 100 backstroke earned her a tweet-out from pop star Justin Bieber.

> Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Love scored 16 points apiece to lead the U.S. basketball team to a 110-63 victory against Tunisia and help the Americans improve to 2-0 in the tournament.

> Chinese teen swimming sensation Ye Shiwen now has two gold medals – but all anybody wants to talk about is whether she’s doping. She shattered the world record in the 400 individual medley, then broke her own Olympic record to take the 200 IM title. The head of the American Swimming Coaches Association was among those openly questioning Ye’s legitimacy, but Olympic organizers resolutely defended her, and she replied “Absolutely not” when asked if she had ever doped.

> Abby Wambach scored to lead the U.S. women to a 1-0 win over North Korea in soccer – a victory that gave the Americans first place in its group.

> Beijing gold medalists Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser of the United States improved to 2-0 in the preliminary round of the beach volleyball tournament by beating Spain in three sets. The win against the only other unbeaten team in their pool virtually assures the Americans of a trip to the knockout round.

MEDALS

> With golds in swimming, synchronized platform diving and fencing, China built its Olympics-leading total to 13, with the United States second with nine golds. Both countries are tied with 23 medals overall.

NOT THEIR FINEST HOUR

> Water polo power Hungary, which has won three straight Olympic gold medals, lost to Montenegro 11-10, two days after dropping its opener in London to Serbia. The Hungarians next face Romania and Britain before closing out the preliminary stage against the United States.

ROYAL TREATMENT

> The queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips added to the family silver, helping team Britain to a second-place finish behind Germany in equestrian eventing. And her mother, Princess Anne, presented the medal.

CULTURAL COMPROMISE

> Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani, a female judo fighter from Saudi Arabia, will be allowed to compete Friday wearing a form of headscarf. A compromise was reached after several days of IOC-brokered talks between the International Judo Federation and the Saudi Olympic Committee.
