Why Chocolate is Good for Your Health

Why Chocolate is Good for Your Health

Washington: As Valentine`s Day approaches, the American Chemical Society (ACS) – the world`s largest scientific society, has released a new Bytesize Science video today featuring five chemistry facts that highlight why chocolate, in moderation, may be good for you.

The video explains how a bar of chocolate contains hundreds of compounds, many with beneficial properties.

Among the video`s “sweet” facts were that chocolate may improve your mood, and not just because of its delicious flavor.

Chocolate contains a number of chemicals that inhibit the breakdown of the neurotransmitter anandamide – sometimes called “the molecule of bliss” – which can block feelings of pain and depression.

Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, stimulants that can provide a burst of energy.

According to an article from the ACS` Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the naturally occurring polyphenols in cocoa – the key ingredient in chocolate – boost levels of HDL, commonly known as the “good cholesterol.”

CANCER TREATMENT:

A group of researchers at the Science and Technology Institute of Food and Nutrition in Spain has recently found that consumption of large amount of cocoa can help in preventing the risk of development of bowel cancer. It is being said by the team that the food such as cocoa can prove highly helpful in fighting disease.

The team suggests that eating high content of cocoa can help in reducing intestinal complaints that are made due to oxidative stress. They told the reporters that cocoa is rich in polyphenols, which plays a vital part in protecting against cancer.

As per the report, the team conducted a research on rats to find out if or not consumption of cocoa helps to them to fight bowel cancer. Some of the rats were given 12% of cocoa for eight weeks daily while the others were provided with a diet without cocoa content. Eight weeks later, all of the rats were exposed to a tumour-causing chemical known as azoxymethane. It is used for inducing colon cancer, told the team.

After the research, it was noticed by the team that the rats that had cocoa diet were developing comparatively less number of pre-cancerous lesions as against those who were not given cocoa at all.

Chocolate may help keep people slim

ISLAMABAD: People who are used to eat chocolate regularly tend to be thinner, new research suggests.

The findings come from a study of nearly 1,000 US people that looked at diet, calorie intake and body mass index (BMI), a measure of obesity, reported BBC.

It found those who ate chocolate a few times a week were, on average, slimmer than those who ate it occasionally.

Even though chocolate is loaded with calories, it contains ingredients that may favour weight loss rather than fat synthesis, scientists believe.

Despite boosting calorie intake, regular chocolate consumption was related to lower BMI in the study.

The link remained even when other factors, like how much exercise individuals did, were taken into account.

According to the researchers, there is only one chance in a hundred that their findings could be explained by chance alone.

Consumption of certain types of chocolate has been linked to some favourable changes in blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and cholesterol level.

Chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, does contain antioxidants which can help to mop up harmful free radicals – unstable chemicals that can damage our cells. via: thenews.com.pk
