Arms Race Continues: India Air Force Version of ‘Akash’ Missiles Successfully Test Fired

India today successfully test fired its two indigenously-developed surface-to-air ‘Akash’ missiles of Air Force version with a strike range of 25 km from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur near here.

“Two Air Force version Akash missiles were test-fired from the ITR in quick succession. Both the trials were successful and met all the mission objectives,” ITR Director M V K V Prasad said.

The anti-aircraft missiles, with a strike range of 25 km and capable of carrying warhead of 60 kgs, were test fired from a mobile launcher at launch complex-III of the ITR.

The trial, which formed part of the country’s routine air defence exercises, was conducted at around noon, said an official of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) associated with the Akash missile project.

To re-validate the technology and operational efficacy of the missile, defence forces conducted the trial with logistic support provided by the ITR, the official said. The Akash weapon system, which has its Army version too, was inducted into the armed forces in 2008.

Today’s test-fire came after similar trials conducted from the same test range on May 24, 26 and 28.

“During the trial, the sophisticated missiles were aimed at intercepting floating object supported by a pilotless target aircraft at a definite altitude over the sea,” sources said.

Akash, an anti-aircraft defence system, can simultaneously engage several targets with ‘Rajendra’ radar developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a DRDO laboratory in Bangalore.

‘Rajendra’ does the surveillance, tracks the target, acquires it and guides the missile towards it.

Abu Yahya Al-Libi Al Qaeda’s Leader No. 2 Killed in Drone Strike: US official

In another “serious blow” to al Qaida, a US drone strike in Pakistan killed its No. 2 leader Abu Yahya al-Libi, who helped steer the terrorist group after Osama bin Laden’s death, the White House has confirmed.

Al-Libi’s death was “another serious blow to core al Qaida,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters on Tuesday. “His death is part of the degradation taking place in core al Qaida in the last several years.”

However, Carney was unable to provide further details. Earlier on Tuesday, US officials said that al-Libi was killed by a CIA drone strike in Pakistan launched Monday. al-Libi’s death marks one of the most significant blows to al Qaida since the US military killed Osama bin Laden in a daring nighttime raid on his hideout in Abbottabad, near Islamabad on May 2 last year.

al-Libi was second-in-command behind al Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, who took the helm after bin Laden’s death.
“There is no one who even comes close in terms of replacing the expertise (al Qaida) has just lost,” CNN cited an unnamed US official as saying.

al-Libi “played a critical role in the group’s planning against the West, providing oversight of the external operations efforts,” the official said adding, “Zawahiri will be hard pressed to find any one person who can readily step into Abu Yahya’s shoes.”

“In addition to his gravitas as a longstanding member of AQ’s leadership, Abu Yahya’s religious credentials gave him the authority to issue fatwas, operational approvals and guidance to the core group in Pakistan and regional affiliates.”

An Islamic scholar and high-ranking member of the group, al-Libi frequently appeared in Internet videos, CNN said. He gave many videotaped speeches praising al Qaida leaders, urging resistance and trying to recruit new members.

The court will take up the case in an open hearing today (Wednesday). The three-member bench hearing the case will be headed by the chief justice himself and also include Justice Jawwad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif.

When this correspondent approached Arsalan, he denied many of the allegations but confessed some of them saying that this was his personal business dealing. According to family sources, Malik Riaz is currently in Dubai.

President of Egypt Hosni Mubarak Sentenced to Life in Prison

CAIRO: Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak and his security chief were given life in prison on Saturday over the deaths of protesters in 2011, but the acquittal of six police chiefs sparked calls for a mass protest.

Judge Ahmed Refaat sentenced the 84-year-old former leader and his interior minister Habib al-Adly to life for their role in the deaths of protesters during the revolt that ousted them, but acquitted the six security commanders on the same charges.

A senior lawyer for Mubarak’s defence team told AFP the strongman, who was taken to a Cairo prison after the hearing, will appeal the sentence.

But once at Tora prison on Cairo’s outskirts, a tearful Mubarak refused to leave the aircraft, and security officials said he “suffered from a surprise health crisis” before they finally convinced him to go in.

The verdict prompted outrage both inside and outside the courtroom.

“Void, void” and “The people want the judiciary purged” could be heard, as furious lawyers told AFP they feared Mubarak would be found innocent on appeal.

The powerful Muslim Brotherhood told AFP it had called for mass protests nationwide, while other groups including the pro-democracy April 6 movement announced they would take to the streets in protest.

Rights groups slammed the verdict as failing to deliver full justice.

Mubarak’s sentence “is a significant step towards combatting long-standing impunity in Egypt” but the security chiefs’ acquittal “leaves many still waiting for full justice,” Amnesty International said in a statement.

“Many see the acquittal of all the senior security officials as a sign that those responsible for human rights violations can still escape justice,” it said.

“The verdict fails to deliver justice, it fails to deter police from future abuse and it comes against the backdrop of acquittals in police trials,” Heba Morayef, Cairo-based researcher for Human Rights Watch, told AFP.

Corruption charges against Mubarak’s sons, Alaa and Gamal, were dropped because of the expiry of a statute of limitations, and the former president was acquitted in one of the graft cases.

“We will appeal. The ruling is full of legal flaws from every angle,” Yasser Bahr, a senior member of Mubarak’s defence team, told AFP.

Asked if Mubarak was likely to win the appeal, Bahr said: “We will win, one million percent.”

Mubarak, in sunglasses and wearing a beige track-suit, had his arms folded and showed no emotion inside the caged dock as Chief Judge Ahmed Refaat read the verdict.

Alaa and Gamal, looking tired with dark circles under their eyes, appeared close to tears on hearing the verdict.

“It’s vindicating to Egyptians to see Mubarak and his interior minister sentenced to life, but the verdict raises more questions than answers,” said Hossam Bahgat, the director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights, who was outside the court with members of the victims’ families.

“The court appears to have found no evidence that the killings were committed by policemen. It seems the court convicted Mubarak and Adly for failing to prevent the killings,” Bahgat told AFP.

“It’s 100 percent certain that this will go to appeal and the court is very likely to order a retrial,” said Bahgat, a respected activist and lawyer.

In delivering the ruling, Judge Refaat painted a grim picture of life under Mubarak, listing hardship after hardship suffered during his three-decade rule.

He said some “went hungry” and spoke of conditions in the “rotting slums.”

Refaat said the protesters who joined in the 2011 uprising in Cairo’s Tahrir Square were “peaceful” and wanted only “justice, freedom and democracy.”

Clashes erupted outside the courtroom after the sentencing, with police resorting to stun grenades to control angry crowds.

Mubarak, the only autocrat toppled in the Arab Spring to be tried in person, Adly and the six others had faced charges over their involvement in ordering the deaths of some of the estimated 850 people killed in the uprising.

Egypt has been ruled by the military since Mubarak was forced to resign on February 11 last year after 18 days of protests nationwide.

Mubarak was held at a hospital in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh following his arrest last year, before the military appeared to bow to protester demands that he and former regime officials face trial.

Egypt’s military insists that the prosecution’s investigations and the charges eventually filed were independent judicial decisions.

Critics say the investigation was hasty and sloppy, resulting in a trial based on patchwork evidence that may see Mubarak acquitted.

The ex-president was brought to Cairo for the trial, which began on August 3, and he has been held there since.

Gujranwala Fake Private College Sealed Due to Fraud with Students

GUJRANWALA:
Nearly 200 students and others vandalised a private college on Wednesday, breaking the doors, windows and furniture over non-issuance of roll number slips for the intermediate examination that began on Wednesday.

Some of the students were issued slips that turned out to be bogus. The protesters burned some motorcycles belonging to the college staff.

Later the Education Department sealed the college and the police arrested its chairman. A fraud case has been registered against him.

Students of Intermediate in Computer Science (ICS) part-I at the Victoria College of Commerce on Kachha Aimenabad Road had gathered outside the office of the registrar in the morning and demanded roll number slips to sit their statistics examinations at 1:30 pm.

They were told to submit their fees for the second year first. After roll number slips were issued to two students, who paid the fees, turned out to be bogus.

The students then attacked the principal’s office and damaged college property.

Muhammad Adeel and Asif Asghar, the principal and the vice principal, respectively managed to escape, but the students caught hold of the chairman, Muhammad Yousaf. He was beaten up and handed over to Sabzi Mandi police, where a fraud case has been registered against him.
