Melbourne: In a new study, Australian researchers will determine if extracts from tomatoes and grapes can bolster the skin’s ability to fend off UV damage and improve its ability to repair following UV exposure.

The study is being launched by the Australasian Research Institute, the research arm of the Sydney Adventist Hospital, according to News.com.au.

“UV damage is a big problem in Australia. If we can improve your repair process we can limit the number of mutations that can be potentially carcinogenic,” the site quoted research scientist Olivia Szeto as saying.

Grapes and tomatoes were selected because they contain carotenoids and polyphenols, which have been shown to have powerful antioxidant properties.

According to Szeto, the researchers are hopeful results would be available early next year.

Earlier a UK study had found that lycopene – an anti-oxidant that causes the red pigment in tomatoes and other vegetables – was the key to tomatoes’ anti-ageing qualities and could guard against sunburn.

Cleansers
A cleanser should remove dirt, makeup and excess oil from the skin, leaving pores clear and free of any obstructions. Homemade cleansers for oily skin are easy to make. For a cucumber cleanser, use a juicer to create cucumber juice. Add a small amount of the juice to a small amount of milk. You only need enough to cleanse your face. Wipe on your face, and then rinse with lukewarm water. Or mix 2 tbsp. of baking soda with tomato or lemon juice, creating a thick paste. Wash your face with the paste, scrubbing gently, and rinse your skin with lukewarm water.

Astringents
Astringents tighten pores, making your skin look cleaner and reducing oil secretions. For simple homemade astringents that work well with oily skin, gently apply one of the following on your face with a cotton ball in the morning and evening, after cleansing: lemon juice; lime juice; white vinegar, either by itself or diluted with water in a 1:1 ratio; or tomato juice (which should be rinsed off 30 minutes after application to avoid skin staining). A multi-herbal astringent can also be made by boiling 1 cup of water, then adding 1 tbsp. each of dried yarrow, sage and peppermint leaves — or 2 tbsp. of fresh leaves. Smooth the paste onto your face and allow it to remain for at least 15 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.

Moisturizers
Moisturizers are meant to provide proper hydration to our skin, either as an oil or a lotion. Homemade lotions require time in the kitchen, and it can be an involved process. However, a moisturizing lotion can be made by simply mixing 10 drops of lavender oil, 1 oz. of sunflower oil, five drops of bergamot essential oil and five drops of clay sage oil. Feet are hard workers. They support all your body weight and more! They’re stuffed in socks and shoes, and often they’re not washed and cared for as well as the other parts of your body. The result: The soles of your feet may develop red or flaky patches and begin to peel, itch, and crack. You may even experience bleeding or discharge. Cracked feet, also known as heel fissures, are a common problem for people of all ages. When the cracks in your feet are deep, they often split the skin wide open, making it prone to bleeding and infection, which can cause pain when you stand or walk. So it’s important to treat cracked feet before they get worse. Here, some easy tips for how to treat cracked feet.

Cracked feet are often caused by dry skin that makes them extra susceptible to irritation and cracking. Pressure on the foot makes the skin split. One way to avoid this is to moisturize the soles of your feet twice a day. Use a hypoallergenic moisturizing lotion and apply liberally to feet, paying extra attention to your heels and tendons.

Drink more water to combat dryness and dehydration, which can cause cracked feet or make them worse.

Get regular pedicures so that your feet are clean, healthy, and smooth.

Avoid open-heeled or high-heeled shoes, as these can make cracked feet drier and more painful. Wear breathable shoes with or without cotton socks.

Soak your feet in warm water with liberal amounts of baby oil. Pat dry and surround them in plastic wrap so that they stay moist.

Douse feet in petroleum jelly and cover them with clean, soft socks. Dab petroleum jelly on the cracks throughout the day.

If you have conditions like corns, warts or bunions, see a podiatrist. Moisturize your feet daily – it’s easy to do this at night and apply white cotton footies or socks to hold in the moisture overnight.

Treatment Options
Some people prefer foot soaks. You can use Epsom salts for healing. Keep in mind that salt water can burn some deep splits in skin, but salt does have amazing healing properties.

Paraffin baths can be very soothing and healing. However, you cannot use paraffin if you have splits in your skin. This would be something to begin doing after the cracks have healed. Exposing the delicate tissues of your inner feet to the heat and wax of paraffin treatments would not be beneficial – it’s meant for the outer skin only.

Find a healing salve to use on your feet nightly. Skin does not heal easily when it is dry. Try Neosporin, Bag Balm, or Aquaphor Healing Ointment. After the cracks have healed, you can switch to a great lotion if you choose.
Wear lightweight, white cotton socks or footies with your salve or lotion. Colored socks can allow for dyes to enter your wounds.

Wear sensible footwear. If your feet have taken a beating, and your shoes rub, squeeze or create pressure in areas that have cracked, you need to wear something different to allow your skin to heal. Pressure directly added to cracked skin will not allow for healing.

If you are unable to manage your feet or have difficulty reaching them, get a pedicure regularly. The soak, exfoliation and massage can help with treatment and prevention of dry, cracked skin.

Alright, winter time is coming upon us and it’s time for the dry skin to begin. Get out your chisel and hammer to slough off the thick layer that’s about to ensue. Remember when your dry scaling heels snagged on the sheets last year? And what about the time your elbow caught onto the inside of your sleeve? Dry skin can cause ashiness, cracking, patchiness and incessant itching of the skin. Winter deals a cold hand to the body and does a doozy especially on heels, elbows and knees. Well it’s time to take a stand against it before winter gets here. We need to learn how to say goodbye to dry skin forever. Here’s a few tips to help you out.

Put Moisture Back in the Air

Winter loves to suck out all the moisture in the air. Buying a humidifier can help cure that. But to take a cheaper route you can try running your shower in the morning for 15 minutes. Or perhaps boiling a large pot of water in the mornings while you get ready for work can help put moisture back into the air as well.

Watch Out For Drying Soaps

Look for soaps that have extra moisturizers in them. Try soaps like Olay Body with Ultra Moisture, Dove with Hydrating Lotion, or Ambi Cocoa Butter Cleansing Bar. Also, avoid soaps with anti-bacterial protection. Anti-bacterial soaps will contain alcohols that can be rough on your skin.

Lotions and Body Oils

Using lotions and body oils right after you shower helps trap and keep the moisture into your skin. Lotions such as Vaseline Petroleum Jelly Cream, Deep Moisture, Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion and Curel Ultra Healing Lotion can help your skin stay hydrated.

Oils such as Neutrogena’s Body Oil, Vaseline Gel Body Oil or Burt’s Bees Mama Bee Nourishing Body Oil can give your skin that added moisture it needs. Even applying Vitamin E Oil can help keep skin moisturized and supple. Now don’t get carried away with this one unless you plan on getting out of a tight squeeze somewhere. Putting on too much will have you slicker than a banana pill on a freshly waxed gymnasium floor.

My regimen for my body isn’t that complex I simply shower with Softsoap bodywash that contains moisture beads and lotion down with Curel Ultra Healing Lotion. For extra skin softness and moisturizing I apply my Neutrogena Body Oil which gives my skin a nice healthy glow. As for my feet, I jump through a few hoops to keep them from snagging my sheets. I use a foot scrub called Tree Hut Shea Sugar Body Scrub from Wal-Mart, 4-in-1 Foot File that I purchased from Target and Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Foot Cream that I also purchased from Wal-Mart. I also use the body scrub on my elbows and arms to shed off some of the dead skin. As soon as winter-like conditions start to display itself, I began my treatment. I may use the 4-in-1 foot file once a week or every two weeks. It contains a pumice stone, brush, file and buffer. But I apply my body scrub and foot cream daily. Anything to prevent having Fred Flinstone feet.
