One Act Play – Anton Chekhov is almost universally regarded as the greatest Russian writer. “The Bear”

THE BEAR

Anton Chekhov is almost universally regarded as the greatest Russian writer. “The Bear” is his representative play. Popova has cut herself off from society and shut herself in the four walls of her house after her husband’s death. She has vowed to wear the mourning dress and not to go out of her house.

A hard knocking is heard outside. Smirnov, a middle aged landowner, comes in. he tells Popova that her late husband had died in his debt. He demands the payments of that debt immediately. Popova promises to pay the money the day after tomorrow. Smirnov gets angry and announces that he will stay there until the money is paid. Both of them behave very ridiculously. Popova call him ‘bear’ as he behaves very rudely.

Mean while Smirnov falls in love with Popova. He kneels before her and says, “I love you as I have never loved before.” Popova is also attracted toward Smirnov.

Their behaviour is so funny, ridiculous and child like. It makes the play very interesting and amusing. The play comes to a comic end. (180 words)

BA English Notes – Summary of “The Boy Comes Home” – A Comedy One Act Play by A. A. Milne

THE BOY COMES HOME

The play is pleasant light comedy. Philip is the young army officer who has just returned from war. His father has died leaving him and his large fortune in the charge  of his Uncle James. Uncle James is a very strict man who wants perfect discipline  in the house.

Philip does not get up early for breakfast he comes down and ask the cook to bring him breakfast. She says that she was ready to serve a notice of one month and leave her job. Philip behaves like a mature man. He takes out his cheque book, writes on it and tells her to get her pay and leave the house at once. She is nonplused and goes out to prepare breakfast for him.

Uncle James comes down and gets angry when he learns that Philip was so late for breakfast. He says that he wanted to talk Philip about his coming into business. Philip again behaves like a grown up man. He tells his uncle to wait for him in the drawing room. Uncle James is angry with Philip, waiting outside; he goes to sleep and sees a strange dream.

He asks Philip to join the vegetable business but Philip refuses and plans to work as an architect. When James shows his will, Philip takes out the loaded revolver and says that he may use the force of weapon to counter his uncle’s purse. James becomes nervous; suddenly he wakes and find that it was all in hid dream.

At the moment Philip arrives from the dining room. James says to Philip that he may choose the profession of his choice, but Philip says that it was his uncle who should make the decision. Uncle takes him to his office to introduce him to his manager. In this way this light comedy comes to an end. (307 words)
